Our Week

We were able to accomplish quite a bit this week. It was nice to have 5 days together and get back to all of our routines.   I spent some time Thursday and Friday reading individually with each of the children.  I am pleased with the progress they have made.  I will be making some changes to the reading levels in Raz Kids next week.  Please remember to use this on nights the kids do not have their book bags.

I wanted to let you know that when the announcement came to go into lockdown positions on Monday the children went immediately and were very quiet.  No one seemed scared or upset.  I was a little nervous but didn't let the kids know that.  Apparently on Tuesday when I was home with Mathew and there was a sub here, it was brought up by one of the kids that 20 children were killed in a school.  I have not heard anything since I returned on Wednesday.  However, I wanted you to know in case your child mentioned something.

We worked on visualizing this week.  I read poems while the children closed their eyes and made a picture in their heads.  Then they had to go to their table spots and draw what they saw.  We did this three different times this week.

We wrote silly rhyming stories as a class today. The kids laughed a lot and were able to come up with great rhyming words.

We practiced writing sentences with what and do. The kids are really getting good at leaving spaces.  Now we have to work on periods and question marks at the end.

In math we worked really hard on teen numbers this week. Hopefully you received all of the family letters so you are up to date on how these are being taught with the new math series.  The kids used pennies, dimes and square inch tiles to make teen numbers.  We also reviewed 5 groups.  The kids are able to tell addition and subtraction what if number stories and solve them.  They love coming up to the smart board and making one up for the whole class to solve.

We started out Day/Night unit in science this week. The kids learned about the moon, sun, and stars. They learned the difference between day and night.  Also, we learned that the sun moves position at different times of the day. We put a lot of our work in our science journals.

We made a snowman for fun out of shaving cream and glue this afternoon.

We will be going to the Children's Museum on February 2nd.  Permission forms will be sent home shortly.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
