Great Week!

Dear Families,

Our week flew by once again!  The only interruption to our normal routine was SWARM day which is when the kids are telling how many sounds, letters, and reading nonsense words to the paras. We use this data as part of our decision making process for who gets a little extra help and who needs to be challenged.

We finished up our science unit on Day and Night.  The kids seem to understand that the earth rotates around the sun and that is why we have day and night.  They know that the sun doesn't move.  We learned that things look smaller when they are far away and that is why the sun looks so small even though it is bigger than our earth.  We will be taking a science test next week.

I will be sending portfolios home next week so you can finally see the work your child has been doing. There will be a sheet at the front of the portfolio for you and your child to fill out.

In math we worked really hard on understanding that teen numbers are 10 and some more.  For example, 10 and 4 more is 14.  The kids got a chance to tell math stories to the class again. They absolutely love this and it is so cute.  There is still some confusion about when to use the + and - signs but that is ok. They can solve them and generally get the correct answer.

In reading we practiced wondering and asking questions while we are reading a story and when it is finished.

Sight words: in and went
We played sparkle and tic tac toe to practice these words.  We used them in writing as well.

Word Family: it words such as pit, bit, fit, hit, sit, zit, and quit.

Handwriting: Letter Uu

Writer's workshop- The kids practiced telling more about a subject. I put a picture of pink elephant with glasses and the kids had to write about what they saw.  One day they had to write about walking in the woods. What did they see and what happened.  I am simply amazed at how well they are writing sentences! I can read most of what they write and the kids can read it back to me as well which is equally important.

I noticed this week during gym time that several girls do not have tennis shoes to participate. Please send in a pair of tennis shoes that your child can keep here or send them on gym days which are on the monthly calendar.
