Week of March 4-8

Dear Families,

I enjoyed seeing all of you for conferences the past week. We had 100% attendance. Thanks for taking an active role in your child's education.

With the snow day on Tuesday and me being out of the room at a reading meeting on Wednesday, I don't know where the week went.

Monday we celebrated Dr. Suess's birthday by doing all kinds of Cat in the Hat activities.  A favorite was the hats and having our noses painted with whiskers.

We didn't have new sight words this week.

Our new word family was ug words.  This was our first u word family.  The kids seemed to catch on rather quickly.

Handwriting: Letters Ww and Xx. We are almost finished with all of the letters.  So.. I will be expecting the kids to try to make them the way they were taught.

We wrote another story during our Writer's Workshop time. The kids worked on adding chocolate sprinkle words to their story.  Ask your child to tell you about chocolate sprinkle words.  They are fancy words not boring words.

We started our non-fiction selection of books. The kids practiced making connections to non-fiction this week.  We will continue this into next week.

In science we started our weather unit.  We looked at all kinds of weather and recorded the temperature each day this week as well as what kind of weather we were having.  We thought it was funny that the temperature changed within 5 minutes on the KARE 11 site.  It went from 28 to 30. The kids couldn't understand how that could happen.

Tiny Tumblers were introduced in math. Ask your child about them.  We worked with patterns and partners of 10 this week as well.  We used newspapers to come up with real life math stories.

Looking ahead, next Friday we will be going to McColl Pond with the other kindergarten classes. We will be rotating through all teachers doing science lessons all morning. We thought it would be fun to bring lunches over there and play on the playground for recess.  We are looking for 2 parents per classroom to help from 9:30-12:45.  Please let me know if you can join us!

Have a lovely weekend!
